People power fatigue is a myth

Mammoth anti-Arroyo rally in Makati, July 13
Are Filipinos already tired of change? Are we that cynical nowadays?
We’ve been hearing these words from the likes of Ignacio Bunye and Mike Defensor. They said there is already a “people power fatigue.” Nothing will happen anyway, so why clamor for a regime change? Who will replace Gloria, Rez Cortez? They said people power is already a thing of the past.
But it did not stop there. Now they’re saying that we should stand by the constitution and follow the rule of law. In the eyes of these Arroyo lapdogs who once went to Edsa, the parliament of the streets or people power is unconstitutional, as long as it is shouting for Arroyo’s ouster.
This is also the chorus being sung by former President Aquino and the Hyatt 10, but not to defend Arroyo anymore. The president should resign and give way for the constitutional successor, they said.
Meanwhile, former President Ramos and Speaker De Venecia are playing the old tune again with their call for charter change. As the saying goes, try and try until you succeed (perhaps die, they’re already old anyway).
The rift within the ruling Arroyo clique is already evident, but there is still a common denominator that keeps them together.
Apparently, these might all be part of a grand ploy to preserve their common interests.
Amid mounting protests, the ruling clique knew that there is no other way for Arroyo but to leave Malacañang. They also know that Noli de Castro and the whole ruling clique will soon suffer Arroyo’s fate unless they find a way out of the mess…and they did, thus the calls to follow the constitutional process.
Their solution is to discredit people power and the entire mass movement and hijack the people’s imminent victory. In this way, Arroyo may already be out (at least in the public’s eye), but the whole gang stays under her protégé.
The ruling clique is more cunning than ever. After all, the Estrada experience has already taught them that they can no longer rule the old way.
But they underestimated the Filipino people. They may have already become more cunning, but the people now are more vigilant and critical. The Gloriagate scandal brought the public’s political consciousness another notch higher.
So, are we already tired of change?
History will always tell us that Filipinos never stopped to seek for change and we never will.
No dummy government in any crisis-ridden, foreign dominated country can prevent the social volcano from erupting.
Change, after all, is the only constant thing in this world.
